Right On! Magazine participated in Community Media Day at New York City Hall, an important gathering recognizing the vital role community-based media plays in informing, empowering and connecting New Yorkers.
Hosted by New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin, the event brought together members of the community media landscape to spotlight the organizations and journalists committed to telling stories that are often overlooked by mainstream media.
For Right On! Magazine, the event represented an opportunity to connect with fellow media professionals, share perspectives and reaffirm the publication’s longstanding commitment to documenting Black culture, entertainment and community voices.

Participation in Community Media Day also underscored the continuing importance of independent and community media outlets in New York City — particularly at a time when trusted, culturally relevant storytelling remains essential.

“Community media has always been about giving people a voice and making sure our stories are seen, heard and preserved,” said Cynthia Horner, CEO/Publisher of Right On! Magazine. “Right On! has been telling our stories for generations, and we are proud to be part of this important conversation about the future of community media in New York City.”
The gathering provided an opportunity for media organizations to network, exchange ideas and discuss the challenges and opportunities facing community journalism and culturally specific media. Horner also urged the City Council members to explore partnerships with businesses which have a need for youth employment–something that is concerning to parents and teens alike. Right On! participates in NYC’s Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP), Ladders For Leaders and Work, Learn, and Grow, which offers select interns an opportunity to work with Right On! Digital during the summer and winter months. Several of the students have been given the opportunity to write articles, contribute social media posts, and gain mentorship opportunities from media professionals, including Kenneth Harris aka KENTHEPHOTOGRAPHER of Right On! Media Holdings, LLC.
