Cineverse and Air Bud Entertainment have announced the return of the beloved Air Bud franchise with the upcoming theatrical release of Air Bud Returns, arriving in theaters on January 22, 2027.
The new family film marks Buddy’s long-awaited return to the big screen, bringing audiences back to Fernfield, “where anything is possible.” The film celebrates the legacy of the original Air Bud while introducing a new generation to the heartwarming story and its famous message that “there still… ain’t no rule that says a dog can’t play basketball.”
In Air Bud Returns, 14-year-old Jacob dreams of becoming a star basketball player. After the loss of his father, that dream seems farther away than ever. When Jacob and his mother move into his father’s childhood home in Fernfield, he discovers an old VHS tape of Air Bud and learns that his father once played on the Timberwolves alongside the original Air Bud. Jacob soon befriends a stray golden retriever he names Buddy, and together they learn to play basketball, unite a team of misfits, and chase their championship dreams.
