At just 10 years old, Matthew LB McCollum is already building an impressive list of acting credits while exploring his many interests beyond performing. His television credits include ABC’s hit comedy series Abbott Elementary, where he played Nate in the episode “The Deli,” two appearances on CBS’s The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and a role on the PBS Kids animated series Lyla in the Loop. Matthew is also set to appear in the upcoming film Unhinged Love from Hungerford Films.
Matthew’s journey into acting began when he was 7 years old. His first acting experience came through a local movie called 10 Minutes Ago, after his mother signed him up because he fit the description of the character they were looking for.
“I could memorize the lines well. I was good at acting,” Matthew shared. “So, my mom asked, ‘Do you want to keep doing this?’ I was like, ‘Okay, sure.”
From there, Matthew continued developing his skills and discovering his passion for performing. Although auditions can sometimes be challenging, he has learned the importance of preparation and staying focused.
“I just really try to immerse myself in the role,” Matthew explained. “I focus on the role, I focus on remembering my lines, but also doing all the actions that I need.”
For Matthew, persistence is one of the most important parts of pursuing acting. His advice to other aspiring young performers is to stay patient and continue working toward their goals.
“No matter how many auditions you fail, eventually you’re going to find one role that is just perfect, and you love it,” he said. “I really love space, so I’m really interested in space science.”
Whether he is performing on screen or learning about the universe around him, Matthew continues to show curiosity, creativity, and determination. As he takes on new opportunities in entertainment and explores his passion for science, he proves that it’s possible to pursue more than one dream at a time.
