(Review) ‘LION’ Episode 1 Review: A Beautiful Beginning to Kio’s Journey

The first episode of National Geographic and BBC Studios’ LION introduces viewers to Kio, a young lion cub, beginning to discover the world around him. From the moment Kio is introduced alongside his mother, Summer, the episode creates an emotional connection through its stunning visuals, immersive storytelling, and incredible attention to detail.

One of the strongest aspects of Episode 1 is its breathtaking cinematography. Every shot feels carefully captured, from gorgeous views of the vast wilderness and the savannah surrounding Kio and his pride to the intimate moments shared between family members. The camera work allows viewers to feel close to Kio’s journey, capturing both the beauty and challenges of life in the wild.

The episode’s music and sound design also add another layer of emotion to the story.  The combination of nature sounds and carefully placed instrumentals helps set the mood throughout each scene. Gentle music creates a warm and comforting feeling during Kio’s happy moments with his mother, while more intense music builds suspense during dangerous encounters. These choices make viewers feel as though they are experiencing every high and low alongside Kio and his family.

What makes Episode 1 especially memorable is the way it shows both the strength and vulnerability of the pride. While lions are often seen as powerful predators, the episode highlights the importance of family and connection. The viewers get to see Kio’s playful personality as he interacts with his older siblings, his curiosity as he explores his surroundings, and his determination as he begins learning what it takes to survive.

The episode also does an incredible job balancing the beauty of nature with the harsh realities of life in the wild. Moments of loss and danger remind viewers how quickly circumstances can change, while moments of growth show Kio slowly becoming more confident. Watching him experience new challenges, from learning to find his place within the pride to discovering his own courage, makes his journey easy to root for.

By the end of Episode 1, LION leaves viewers emotionally invested in Kio’s story and eager to see what comes next. With its stunning cinematography, powerful storytelling, and heartfelt look at the beginning of the cub’s journey, the episode creates a viewing experience that is both visually incredible and deeply moving.
