Bonnets have long been an important protectant for hair during sleep especially in Black communities where preserving moisture, guarding from dryness, and preventing breakage is key. While traditionally worn before a night’s rest, bonnets are now leaving the bedrooms and stepping out into the streets as a trendy accessory. People of all ages are becoming more comfortable not only with wearing them in public but with the idea that it is okay show your hair care routine even if their hair isn’t picture perfect or ready for the public.
While bonnets strictly started off as protective wear, they’ve become barrier-breaking fashion statements. Lightweight and comfortable, bonnets come in all styles suitable for several occasions-whether its running errands, going to the gym, or just expressing personality. Their versatility helps with their growing acceptance and aids in breaking down stigmas, allowing people particularly Black people to celebrate their hair care more openly and outside the home.
Dos and Don’ts to Wearing Bonnets:
Do:
- Use Satin or Silk bonnets to prevent breakage and for sensitive skin
- Wear your bonnet overnight to keep that hairstyle neat and protected
- (may be obvious) Choose a bonnet that fits, too large can slip off your head overnight and too small will be very uncomfortable
Don’t:
- Put wet hair n the bonnet-it can create bacteria
- Wear a dirty bonnet. It can contribute to scalp itchiness and irritation
Lastly, do what you’re comfortable with. You don’t have to wear a bonnet inside or outside just because you see somebody else doing it. Bonnets are for protection, but they may not be for everybody. Ther are other ways to protect and wrap your hair, do what works out for your hair.
