Former President Jimmy Carter passed away at age 100. Prominent officials expressed their condolences to this incredible humanitarian who devoted so many years of service helping communities here and abroad.
Joe Biden: “Over six decades, Jill and I had the honor of calling Jimmy Carter a dear friend. But, what’s extraordinary about Jimmy Carter, though, is that millions of people throughout America and the world who never met him thought of him as a dear friend as well.”
The President Carter Family: “The outpouring of love and support we have received from around the world confirms what we have known all along — Jimmy Carter’s family extends far beyond blood relatives. We are sincerely grateful for everyone’s words of comfort and acts of kindness following the passing of such a champion of human rights, justice, and peace.” (Youtube footage credit: The Carter Center)
Barack Obama: “President Carter taught all of us what it means to live a life of grace, dignity, justice, and service. Michelle and I send our thoughts and prayers to the Carter family, and everyone who loved and learned from this remarkable man.”
Bill and Hillary Clinton: “Hillary and I mourn the passing of President Jimmy Carter and give thanks for his long, good life. Guided by his faith, President Carter lived to serve others-until the very end. From his commitment to civil rights as a state senator and governor of Georgia; to his efforts as President to protect our natural resources in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, make energy conservation a national priority, return the Panama Canal to Panama, and secure peace between Egypt and Israel at Camp David; to his post-Presidential efforts at the Carter Center supporting honest elections, advancing peace, combating disease, and promoting democracy; to his and Rosalynn’s devotion and hard work at Habitat for Humanity-he worked tirelessly for a better, fairer world. Hillary and I met President Carter in 1975 and were proud, early supporters of his Presidential campaign. I will always be proud to have presented the Medal of Freedom to him and Rosalynn in 1999, and to have worked with him in the years after he left the White House. Our prayers are with Jack, Chip, Jeff, Amy, and their families.”
Newark, NJ Mayor Ras J. Baraka: “Newark mourns the passing of President Jimmy Carter, and our hearts go out to his and his wife Rosalynn’s family and loved ones. Jimmy and Rosalynn embodied the kind of seamless partnership we strive for in Newark as we work together in a broad collaboration to raise everyone up. Providing housing, improving health and establishing peace and justice are just as important to us as they were to the President and First Lady, and we strive to accomplish these goals with the same humility, grace and unwavering faith that they demonstrated. Let each of us pause to recognize our own power to inspire others with our vision — and honor President Carter by dedicating ourselves to one another‘s well-being, and to a better world.”
Emmanuel Macron: “Throughout his life, Jimmy Carter has been a steadfast advocate for the rights of the most vulnerable and has tirelessly fought for peace. France sends its heartfelt thoughts to his family and to the American people.”
Mitt Romney: “A man of character and deep faith, Jimmy Carter will be remembered as more than a president. He leaves behind a legacy of service to others, love of family, and devotion to country and democracy. He is home again, reunited with his beloved wife, Rosalynn.”
