Kwanzaa is a seven-day celebration from December 26 to January 1, honoring African-American heritage, unity, and culture. Each day is dedicated to one of the Seven Principles, called the Nguzo Saba, which guide reflection and community growth.
- Umoja (Unity)
Focuses on maintaining unity in the family, community, and nation. It reminds us to work together in harmony and mutual respect. - Kujichagulia (Self-Determination)
Encourages defining ourselves, creating our paths, and speaking for ourselves to shape our destiny. - Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility)
Highlights the importance of building and solving problems together as a community for shared success. - Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics)
Emphasizes supporting community businesses to achieve economic growth and shared wealth. - Nia (Purpose)
Calls for dedication to collective progress and restoring greatness within the community. - Kuumba (Creativity)
Inspires using creativity to improve and beautify the community for future generations. - Imani (Faith)
Promotes belief in our people, leaders, and the righteousness of our collective struggle for a better future.
Each evening, families light a candle on the kinara, reflecting on the day’s principle and engaging in meaningful discussions and activities. Kwanzaa also offers a chance to strengthen bonds and celebrate cultural identity.
