29-year old Quavo of the mega group, Migos, and 27-year-old Saweetie recently filled GQ’s Gerrick D. Kennedy in on their romantic two-year romance which began after an Instagram DM.
“I seen her on my Explore page,” says Quavo. “I was like, ‘Who is this?’ So I did my research and I DM her. I was like, ‘How she going to call herself icy and she don’t talk to me?’ So I slid in her DM. I told her, ‘You an icy girl, you need a glacier boy,’” he says as a nod to her debut single, “Icy Girl.”
“He sent me the snowflake [emoji],” says Saweetie, “and I sent him the stir-fry back”—a reference to the 2018 Migos hit. The DMs led to a first date in Atlanta, filled with missteps. Quavo choked on a crab leg: “I’m still getting to know him, so I feel awkward because he’s, like, choking at the table,” she remembers.
The date ended at storied Atlanta strip club, Magic City. The duo was having a good time until a brawl broke out, and Quavo’s fight or flight kicked in. “I didn’t know if it was on some gang s–, so it was like, ‘Let’s get to the car!’” he says, embarrassed. “All this time, I forget I’m having a date! She catches up and cussed me out in front of Magic City.” And the rest was history.
