Right On! Digital’s Holiday Music Play List

Right On! Digital presents its list of the top holiday songs and videos of 2019.

NE-YO released Another Kind Of Christmas (Motown Records/Compound Entertainment), his first-ever holiday album. The three-time GRAMMY® winner brings his own unique point-of-view to the season with five newly-penned tracks and reimagined versions of thoughtfully-selected Christmas classics – including “Someday At Christmas,” a plea for peace written by Motown songwriters Ron Miller and Bryan Wells for Stevie Wonder during the Vietnam War, and Marvin Gaye’s “I Want To Come Home For Christmas,” inspired by the plight of prisoners of war.
“NE-YO says, of the album “see you this Holiday season and every holiday season after! Think you’re gonna love it that much!”
“Just Ain’t Christmas” candidly captures the pain of a Christmas Eve break-up while the playful double entendres of “Open Mine Tonight” celebrate what goes down after the kids go to bed. “Talk About It” evokes childhood Christmas memories, complete with the inevitable family dramas that unfold – “somebody gon’ fight, somebody gon’ cry, somebody gon’ try to leave/Then they gon’ squash it all right before it’s time to eat.” NE-YO, Satori and Dre Island each take a verse on the reggae-influenced “Christmas Vibez,” which imagines a tropical holiday getaway for two. Other guest artists include Candice Boyd on “Carol Of The Bells” and RaVaughn on “Someday At Christmas.”
NE-YO puts his stamp on such standards as Donny Hathaway’s “This Christmas,”“Merry Christmas Baby,” originally recorded by Johnny Moore’s Three Blazers, and “The Christmas Song,” which was written by Robert Wells and Mel Tormé and first recorded by the Nat King Cole Trio. He recorded Another Kind Of Christmas in Montego Bay, Jamaica with longtime collaborator Curtis “Sauce” Wilson producing many of the tracks.

Tis the season to be jolly and along with it comes Santa, Christmas cookies, movies, and of course holiday music! Thankfully there are great modern artists like MILLIE, putting their own twist to classic Christmas songs.
Millie has released a Santa-mental cover and video for “Let It Snow” that slays with a cosign from Santa himself! Her new cover reworks the R&B version made popular by Wanye Morris of Boyz II Men & Brian McKnight with a little trap mixed in by producer Damon Thomas (Chris Brown, Lionel Richie, Justin Timberlake, Aretha Franklin, P!nk).
If she looks a little familiar, Millie made her breakthrough on X Factor (Season 3) mentored by Simon Cowell! Inspired by first-name icons like Madonna, Marilyn, Janet, Aaliyah, Britney and Gaga, the 20 year-old is a cross-genre singer, dancer, songwriter, and actress whose superstar glam look is matched by her talent.
The “Let It Snow” video directed by K0sh.0 for @yesxlife, produced by Antwanette McLaughlin of The Spice Group.

Emaza keeps the melodic vibes going as Saiyr drops bars about the joys of the holidays. “Christmas With You” has the makings of a holiday classic with a subtle twist to Ludacris’ “What’s Your Fantasy” with a groove of “My Boo” by Ghosttown DJs. If the goal was to shake things up this Christmas, the ladies have done their job.

Now here’s a dope trap Christmas anthem from Bishop Frederick Barr. Barr’s “Black Santa” persona dons the traditional red velvet suit with white fur accented with gold chains, a red bomber hat and full-length red fur. On the song, Barr boasts about delivering presents in the hood with swag from his cranberry-colored Chevy. “I’m flexing with the bells going crazy / I’m dressing (yeah) / I’m dripping like gravy,” he raps.

Barr shares the spotlight with his wife (“Mrs. Claus looking real nice”), setting up Erica Barr’s verse. Mrs. Claus reps for the ladies, rapping about making Christmas dinner before passing out gifts in her red bottoms: “I got a bag / It’s filled with gifts / and a Chanel for the assist.”

The hilarious song and video has sparked the #BlackSantaClausChallenge where participants record and upload their own “Black Santa” verse to social media using the aforementioned hashtag.

GRAMMY award-winning rapper Derek Minor knew exactly what his Uncle Fred needed when he asked for a track. “So my uncle walks in the studio and says, ‘Nephew I need one of them slaps. I’m trying to turn this Christmas season up,’” Derek says. “I laugh but I knew he was dead serious. He recorded the song and video all within four days. He’s really out working most young dudes and HE’S rapping. Like for real rapping rapping. 😂

Frederick absolutely wanted to create something special for the holidays.“Christmas is one of my favorite times of the year and I’ve always wanted to do a Christmas project and felt like this is a perfect time as well as sing about my truth,” Barr says. “It’s a fun song that’s catchy and relative to so many people globally.”

Erica adds Mrs. Claus’ rap skills should not come as a surprise. “Many are excited that she is ‘flowing with that rap game’ but I would say ‘that of course she raps’ after all she has been in the ‘wrap game’ for years.”
